Family Medicine Residency Programs
Affiliated with Michigan State University
|
The
Family Medicine Residency Program Network is a collaborative effort
of the family practice residency programs affiliated with Michigan
State University. The goal of the Family Medicine Residency Network
is to serve the faculty, staff, and residents of the MSU-affiliated
programs — bringing them together for activities and collaborative
efforts of mutual benefit, as well as serving the individual programs.
These residency programs include:
The Network strives to foster collaboration in projects and
research, and resource exchanges between programs. The goal of
the Network is to work together toward excellence in residency
education for all affiliated programs.
Network Activities
The Senior Resident Leadership Training was held May 10-11, 2007, at the Kettunen Retreat Center in Tustin, Michigan. The focus of this training is on developing leadership skills (particularly interpersonal and administrative skills) among “to-be” senior residents (particularly chief residents). The training also encourages future communication and collaboration among residents in the Network. Nearly 30 residents attended.
The Residency Program Annual Retreat, September 13-14, 2007, was hosted by the Midland Family Medicine Residency. Michael L. Tuggy, MD, Director of the Swedish Family Medicine Residency in Seattle, Washington, presented the keynote address "Electronic Curriculum Database" and Andrew Bone, MD, from the Midland Residency Program
did a comparison of Electronic Tracking Systems. There was a discussion about participation in the Family Medicine Digital Resources Library database.
Residency Program Director’s Meetings are held four times during the academic year to discuss Network activities and facilitate sharing across programs.
The National Family Medicine Board Review Course was revised and delivered in 2007 by the Network in three courses during May (Chicago) and June (Arlington, VA and Las Vegas). This is a collaboration of the Center for Medical Education, Inc. and Dowden Health Media, along with the MSU Department of Family Medicine. Compact discs of all the slide presentations and an audio version of the course have been delivered to each participating residency program.
Three Days with a Family Doctor Program: The Network sponsors an elective to introduce medical students to individual family doctors
and provide them with a unique three-day experience. This includes the opportunity to spend three full days and nights with a family doctor and his/her family. Students receive one elective credit and their mileage expenses are reimbursed. The host physician receives a small honorarium. Students completing the experience find it extremely rewarding. The program would like to expand and invites recommendations for physician hosts.
Network News is a newsletter covering Network activities, people, and key issues in family medicine.
FPR-NET is a listserv for the faculty of the network, allowing communication with many faculty by sending one message. Updates and resources relating to family medicine and graduate medical education are sent as needed. Members can send messages by sending email to fpr-net@list.msu.edu.
For further information, contact Network Director marolee.neuberger@hc.msu.edu or 517-884-0439. To learn more, see our most recent Annual Report.

The Family Medicine Residency is dedicated to preparing
knowledgeable, compassionate physicians, proficient in the art
and science of family medicine. We emphasize physician
versatility and responsiveness, particularly in the light of the
ever-changing needs of patients and their families. While
focusing on the broad-based skills essential to effectively
manage the practical aspects of primary care, our curriculum is
flexible to the individual needs and plans of each resident.
Our new family medicine office functions as a model of
a private ambulatory group practice. With a diverse patient
population of 16,000, the practice provides residents a variety
of continuity of care experiences. Through a structured balance
of inpatient, outpatient and critical care experiences,
residents learn to practice confidently within all levels of the
patient care continuum. Residents assume primary responsibility
for patient diagnosis and management on teaching services in
surgery, obstetrics, medicine, pediatrics and family medicine.
Special opportunities about for rural, underserved, and managed
care experiences.

McLaren Regional Medical Center's Family Practice Residency is a new and vibrant family practice program. The Director and Associate Director have extensive experience in both undergraduate and graduate family practice education.
The program was recently granted 5 years continuing full accreditation by the Accreditation Committee for Graduate Medical Education. We enjoy superb support from the Board of Trustees, Administration, and Medical Staff, allowing us to have a high ratio of faculty to resident physicians.
Residents learn to provide continuous, comprehensive care from the critical emergencies to the ambulatory setting, allowing residents to develop both office and hospital procedure skills compatible with the practice in rural areas as well as urban or suburban settings. Residents benefit from an excellent balance between clinical autonomy and quality supervision.
We also provide a supportive environment for medical students, hosting core and elective rotations in Family Medicine and also assisting in providing core rotations in Psychiatry.

Midland, MI 48670

A resident's central clinical experience in the program will
be in the care of a patient panel through the Family Practice
Center. The resident will have the responsibilities of being
their personal family physician. One unique feature of the
Midland program involves our commitment to the continuity of
patient care through daily office hours for each resident over
the entire three years of training.
The Family Practice Center functions much as any family
practice group facility. Approximately 18,000 patients are
registered with us, and we see over 34,000 patient visits each
year. Each resident becomes involved in their preventive
medicine, their health monitoring, acute and chronic problem
management, and their rehabilitation.

The Munson Medical Center Family Practice Residency is a
dually accredited postgraduate training program. The three-year
program is one of the few programs in the country with both
osteopathic and allopathic accreditation.
This family practice residency and our medical student
training program are the sole focus for medical education at our
institution. The lack of competition from other residencies
helps to insure access to trainers and to patients. Our Family
Practice Clinic is also dedicated solely to serving as a
continuity training site for the program. We believe this
approach offers excellent preparation for a career in family
practice.

Lansing, MI 48912-2109

Sparrow is an exciting, innovative office-based residency
program. We provide residents with a setting in which to learn
family medicine by actually practicing it. During the first
year, there is a "rotating internship" at Sparrow
Hospital. Exciting second and third years feature primarily
office-based training with on-call care of hospitalized family medicine patients. Call is taken from home in years two and
three; call averages only once every sixth to eighth night.
There are three office settings — two in Lansing, one in Mason
(urban, suburban, rural). Residents have their own panel of
patients for whom they are the primary physician for the
duration of training.
The program is well established and
proven, with 133 board certified graduates. It has seven
full-time board certified program faculty, as well as community
faculty.
