Meeting Expectations on Prevention: Teaching and Evaluating
Clinical Skills and Behaviors Related to Informed Consent in the
Family Practice Clerkship," William C. Wadland, MD, MS,
Principal Investigator, was funded by HRSA for $145,800 from July 1,
2000 to June 30, 2002.
The project is to expand and enhance the quality of predoctoral
primary care medical education through innovations in teaching and
evaluation focusing on common clinical preventive services and
physician/patient shared decision-making about such choices.
Investigators propose to teach medical students enrolled in a
required Family Practice Clerkship evidence-based information about
common clinical preventive services and the process for achieving
patients' shared decision-making/informed consent about such
services. The students will be evaluated using performance-based
assessments as they interact with simulated patients about 1)
screening for high blood cholesterol and other lipid abnormalities,
2) screening for colorectal cancer, 3) screening for prostate
cancer, and 4) screening for breast cancer. The results of the
performance assessment will be incorporated into the final clerkship
grade.
