Linked Medicare/Medicaid Data Set Project

Project staff will undertake a series of activities designed to organize and prepare the linked datasets for analyses including: validation of the Medicare, Cancer Registry, Medicaid eligibility files using a deterministic as opposed to a probabilistic matching algorithm; estimation of the incidence of cancer by site and stage for each of the years 1996-2000; obtain the CMS non-cancer denominator files; development of descriptive statistics regarding the appropriateness of care according to the algorithm developed for the federal grant; and preparation of preliminary costs of care for one year following diagnosis for dually eligible and for Medicare only patients. After adjusting for age, race, and sites of cancer, a comparison will be made between statewide fee-for-service and managed care programs according to the stages of cancer at diagnosis, survival periods and mortality rates.
