Methods in Family Medicine Education Training Program

Purpose: The Department of Family Medicine in the College of Human Medicine at Michigan State University created this program to support the development of primary care and Family Medicine in Japan . The program accepts 1-2 trainees at a time.

Term: 6-12 months. Program dates are flexible.

Location: Department of Family Medicine, College of Human Medicine, Michigan State University, East Lansing, Michigan, U.S.A.

Pre-requisite: Licensed physician in Japan interesting in learning and teaching family medicine

Strong English ability is needed.

Program Cost : 1) Training fee - $ 2,000 per month. 2) Recommend the purchase of a vehicle for transportation (auto insurance cost is approximately $120 per month). 3) Food and lodging. Housing cost - the monthly rent varies from $700-1,000. Food is quite variable but is usually a few hundred dollars per month. 4) International and local travel costs, and other personal expenses. TRAINING PROGRAM OVERVIEW:

This is not a highly structured formal program. Japanese trainees do not diagnose or treat patients. While here, you will be a faculty member of the Department of Family Medicine and will be able to participate in nearly all of the department, college, and university activities. This program is organized around your learning objectives and is primarily one of self-study. You will have regular meetings with the program coordinator and administrative staff to assist you in meeting your goals. There will be opportunities to meet department faculty on an individual basis and to learn from them as we will learn from you. Observation of the primary care medical curriculum is provided in the following areas:

  • Undergraduate education: Small Group Learning, Problem Based Learning, Patient-Physician Relationship, Communication Skills, Clinical Skills, Clinical Clerkships, Bioethics.
  • Postgraduate education : Family Medicine Residency Programs. The opportunity to visit and observe the different residency programs involved in the Michigan State University network located in the cities of Flint, Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, Saginaw, Traverse City, Midland, and Lansing.
  • Geriatrics : Home Care for the Elderly, Geriatric Division within Family Medicine
  • Faculty Development : MSU programs for the development of teaching skills
  • Others: Hospice Care, Evidence Based Medicine, Sports Medicine, etc.

Applications will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis by the Methods program advisory committee.

Meet Our Visiting Scholar

Dr. Fumio Shaku

Dr. Fumio Shaku is a scholar in the Methods of Family Medicine Education Training Program, and has an appointment of Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Medicine. Dr. Shaku will be in the program from April 2008 to March 2009.
